Salt Creek & Striped Peak.

Five minutes down the road from Norma, our cabin near Port Angeles, Salt Creek Recreation Area is the first place we send every guest. Tidepools, a proper hike, a sunset beach — it's the whole peninsula in miniature, and you're back at the cabin before dark.

01The loop

Old growth first, then the Strait.

The Striped Peak Loop starts inside Salt Creek Recreation Area and climbs through old-growth fir and hemlock to a ridge 1,166 feet above the Strait of Juan de Fuca. On a clear day you can see straight across to Vancouver Island. It's about six miles round trip, and the grade is honest but never brutal — we treat it as a slow morning.

On the way, watch for the side path down to a hidden cove. It's easy to miss and worth not missing: a pocket beach with tidepools that most visitors never find.

02The tidepools

Go at low tide. Really.

Tongue Point, at the water's edge of the recreation area, is one of the best tidepool spots on the peninsula. At a good low tide the rock shelf comes alive — anemones, sea stars, urchins, sculpins, crabs going about their business. Check a tide table for Port Angeles before you go: the pools only show at low water, and the difference between a minus tide and an ordinary one is the whole show.

The park sits on what was Camp Hayden, a World War II harbor-defense site. The concrete bunkers are still up in the trees, and people disappear into them for hours.

03Crescent Beach

Stay for the sunset.

Right next door, Crescent Beach faces west across the Strait, which makes it the closest good sunset to the cabin. A small day-use fee buys you one of the better evening shows on the peninsula. Bring something to sit on and something warm — the wind comes off the water as the light goes.

04Know before you go

The practical part.

Salt Creek Recreation Area is a Clallam County park about five minutes from Norma, our cabin near Port Angeles. Dogs are welcome on leash, which is rarer than it should be this close to the national park. Cell service gets patchy near the water, so screenshot the tide table before you leave.

If you only have one afternoon: tidepools at low tide, Crescent Beach for sunset. Save the loop for a full morning.

Five minutes from your coffee.
